FILE -- Freshman wide receiver Nyck Harbor lines up for the play during Թϱ’s game against Florida on Oct. 14, 2023 at Williams-Brice Stadium. Harbor had a 45-yard reception, his longest of the 2023 season, during the Gamecocks 41-39 loss to the Gators. The board of trustees announced Thursday that Mike Furry will be the team's new wide receivers coach.

The University of Թϱ board of trustees met on Thursday to approve the contract of Mike Furrey, who was announced as the Թϱ football team's new wide receivers coach.

The coaching change follows the departure of former wide receivers coach James Coley, who was hired this offseason by the Gamecocks but departed in less than two months to hold a similar role at the University of Georgia. Coley's move to the Bulldogs was made official on Monday.

Furrey will earn a base salary of $425,000 each year of his three-year contract, which runs until the end of the 2025 season. He will also have the opportunity to earn more than $100,000 in bonuses if certain performance-based incentives are met.

He spent the past two seasons as the head football coach at Limestone University, an NCAA Division II program based in Gaffney, Թϱ. Furrey led the Limestone Saints to a combined 16-8 record, reaching the Division II playoffs in both seasons. He had a previous stint as the head coach at Limestone from 2016 to 2017.

In between his two stints with Limestone, he spent four seasons as a wide receivers coach with the NFL's Chicago Bears, helping the team win one divisional championship and make two playoff appearances. Furrey also had a seven-year career as a player in the NFL, spending time with the St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns.

Furrey's hire marks the fifth change to Թϱ's coaching staff during this offseason. In addition to Furrey and Coley, the team hired Marquel Blackwell on Jan. 19 to be the new running backs coach, Joe DeCamillis on Jan. 29 to be the new associate head coach and special teams coordinator and Shawn Elliott on Feb. 16 to be the new tight ends coach.
